iTunes Problems Downloading Some Purchased Items

I had an iTunes issue occur recently that seemed to be caused by one of two recent actions:

1. After following the steps to share music on a single computer with multiple users. iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
2. While logged in as myself with my iTunes account I logged into iTunes with another account and authorized some songs.

An example of the error message from iTunes:

There were problems downloading some purchased items.For more information on the items that could not be downloaded, click below.
There was a problem downloading “Example iTunes Item”. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation.Please check that the connection to the network is active and try again.

Here are the steps to correct the issue:

1. Close iTunes
2. Get Info (Cmd-I) from your iTunes Folder
3. In order to use Finder to make changes you will have to click on the lock at the bottom right and enter the credentials of a user with permission to make changes.
4. Verify that the folder is unlocked (the Locked item in the top grouping is not checked). Note this is not the same as clicking the Lock on the previous step.
5. Verify your user name is listed under Sharing & Permissions and you have Read & Write Privileges
6. To add your user name click +, select your user name, and select Read & Write Privileges
7. Select the gear button (bottom of the Info dialog) and select Apply to enclosed items.

 

iPhone & iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 Update

The OS 3.1.2 update is for bug fixes not new features and it includes the following fixes:

• Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep
• Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart
• Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming

According to Apple, iPhone OS 3.1.2 is compatible with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS. Users can update via iTunes - just connect your iPhone or iPod Touch and click the update button. The update is approximately 270-310MB depending upon device. Apple released iPhone OS 3.1 about one month ago.

Once finished your iPhone will restart. You will be alerted about a Carrier Settings update. This will upgrade the US iPhone OS 3.1.2 to AT&T carrier settings version 5.6. There is no reboot required after updating the carrier settings.

We have experienced the issue where the iPhone would not wake from sleep and it then had to be reset. And we have not run into any issues on the iPod Touch (2nd Generation).

Once we have a few days usage with the updated devices we will report our results. 

Double-click to Add (the world) to iTunes Library

One miscue I make almost weekly is when I want to add some media to iTunes. Under OS X iTunes Add To Library you are presented with a window where you can select the directory and/or files to add. Well I guess it is my Windows double-click nature but when you double-click prior to being at the correct directory level, iTunes tries to add all files from that directory and subdirectories to iTunes. For example I would double-click on Downloads below when I really wanted to single-click to enter that directory:

I can usually catch it and cancel the operation before many (if any) are imported. But I hope I can relearn that operation :-) Thankfully it will only try and import files it knows how to play.

Now with iTunes 9 if I want to import media files that are already on another home network computer (with iTunes up and running) I can select that shared computer, browse and select the file(s), and click Import. That is a nice feature. However this will not help with initially getting the files into iTunes.
